About Dental Caries and Cavities
Technically, dental caries is a bacteria-caused disease characterized by the acid dissolution of tooth enamel and the breakdown of inner dental tissues.
What does that mean? There are acid-producing microorganisms living in your mouth. They live within a stick coating in your mouth called plaque biofilm that is located in the nooks and crannies in and around your teeth.
The acidogenic bacteria feed on food that you eat and produce acid. The presence of this acid over time demineralizes or breaks down tooth structure where the bacteria lives and eventually results in a cavity or decay.
