The cleaver is actually a scoring, or scribing instrument used to mark a very fine line on the glass fiber prior to breaking off the unwanted portion of the fiber. The working end of the cleaver is a beveled sapphire and is very sharp. Caution must be taken not to use the cleaver in a chopping motion when attempting to break off the unwanted portion of the fiber.
